New wilderness?
Posted by egable on July 13th, 2007 filed in WildernessThe idea of making the Dominguez Canyon Wilderness Study Area a wilderness area appears to enjoy popular support, the Grand Junction Daily Sentinel reported today. At a meeting on the future of Dominguez and Escalante canyons led by the Natural Resource and Land Use Policy Institute at Mesa State College, several attendees spoke in favor of such a proposal, noting that such a designation would give greater protection to the canyons’ rock art. However, some people warned that designating the area as wilderness could backfire by making it a more popular spot for recreationists and others warned that a wilderness designation could disrupt current users such as mountain bikers and ranchers.
