Federal study finds high levels of pollution at Rocky Mountain NP
Posted by egable on February 28th, 2008 filed in National parksThe $6 million Western Airborne Contaminants Project found high levels of contaminants in 20 national parks and monuments, including Rocky Mountain National Park. The study found concentrations of current-use pesticides and other compounds, such as the commonly found flame-retardant PBDE, at the park, but concentratrations did not exceed EPA standards.
In Rocky Mountain and Glacier national parks, the National Park Service also found some trout that were “intersex,” meaning both male and female reproductive structures were found in the same fish, a condition that is commonly associated with exposure to certain contaminants such as DDT that mimic the hormone estrogen.
