FWS recommends Rio Grande cutthroat for listing
Posted by egable on May 14th, 2008 filed in Endangered speciesThe Fish and Wildlife Service said listing the Rio Grande cutthroat trout under the Endangered Species Act is warranted, citing “imminent threats” to the species, but said its listing is pre-empted by other species whose status is even more imperiled. In a notice published in the Federal Register today, the agency said it would prepare a proposed rule to list the trout as its priorities allow.
The Rio Grande cutthroat, native to New Mexico and southern Colorado in the Rio Grande drainage, now lives in less than 10 percent of its native range.
In its last status review of the trout, published in 2002, FWS determined listing the trout was not warranted.
