I don't know if anyone else has said thank you yet, but I don't want it to go unsaid. I don't recall how I found your blog, but I bookmarked it, and have come back regularly - it is a wonderful resource. Thank you.

As one who attended McInnis' campaign stop in Walsenburg last week I can testify that NO ONE who spoke on the Pinon Canyon issue said what McInnis claims, that we are upset with Governor Ritter's legislation protecting property owners. The truth is that of 7 or 8 people who addressed the issue, ALL were critical of McInnis' pro-expansion position. McInnis refers to the bill, HB 1317 as "Governor Ritter's needless legislation," but the truth is it was passed by a bi-partisan majority in the Colorado House and Senate. It's not Democrat or Republican legislation, and it's not unnecessary. It protects millions of acres of private and public land in SE Colorado, land that is full of achaeological treasures, land that is abundant with diverse flora and fauna, land that has been taken care of for four and five generations by ranching families, from being federalized by the Pentagon and turned into the world's largest live-fire range. It was, most certainly necessary legislation. Our Colorado legislature deserves credit for passing the bill, and Governor Ritter deserves praise for signing it into law.

Strangely enough however that's almost the exact same statement they made when the original map was leaked showing the 7 million acre phased in takeover of SE Colorado in 2005. 'It was never approved'; 'it was only for planning purposes' etc..

Yet two years later, when they provided supportive documentation to the DoD they included the 7 million acre map as an up to date, desired acreage for expansion of PCMS. And we only know that because of a FOI request and a court order to supply it to the public.

The annexation process may not have been initially 'approved' because the act of actually doing something is the first step toward getting approvals in the DoD. Do first, get approvals later (after all it's easier to ask for forgiveness than permission apparently).

Not 1 More Acre was on the ball in recognizing this and had they not filed the lawsuit these and other pertinent facts would not be known until it's too late.

We are going to stay on the ball too, watching every move that is made to try to secure the expansion by hook or by crook. Our own neighborhood watch(dog) so to speak.

Webster's comments are relevant because of his expertise in dealing with issues related to roadless areas, which are sure to continue to be a point of contention when it comes to the management of national forests. Additionally, Webster's employer, the Theodore Roosevelt Conservation Partnership, has been engaged in the creation of a state rule for the management of more than 4 million acres of roadless areas in Colorado.

Who is Joel Webster? and why did anyone bother to ask him what he thinks- since he is not from Colorado and hence probably doesn't know much about Mr. Sherman.
